markdown-regex-code is a variable defined in markdown-mode.el.
Value
"\\(?:\\`\\|[^\\]\\)\\(?1:\\(?2:`+\\)\\(?3:\\(?:.\\|\n[^\n]\\)*?[^`]\\)\\(?4:\\2\\)\\)\\(?:[^`]\\|\\'\\)"
Documentation
Regular expression for matching inline code fragments.
Group 1 matches the entire code fragment including the backquotes. Group 2 matches the opening backquotes. Group 3 matches the code fragment itself, without backquotes. Group 4 matches the closing backquotes.
The leading, unnumbered group ensures that the leading backquote
character is not escaped.
The last group, also unnumbered, requires that the character
following the code fragment is not a backquote.
Note that \(?:.\|
[^
]\) matches any character, including newlines,
but not two newlines in a row.
